With reference to my confidential despatch of

40885" the 8th August I have the honour to report the further course

of events in connection with the local situation.

2. Considerable numbers of the workers including many of the domestic servants, have not yet returned, but, apart from shipping, the strike is practically at an end, and the ordinary machinery of the Colony is working more or less normally. In spite of the most determined efforts on the part of the Canton Authorities a fairly ample supply of cattle, pigs, fish, and vegetables is being maintained, and prices are little, if anything, above normal. Firewood is being purchased by the Government from Singapore and Saigon, and it is retailed at a rate which has checked a tendency on the part of the dealers to profiteer.

3. Spasmodic attempts continue to be made to create disorder and frighten the Chinese: on the 11th August a small quantity of dynamite was exploded in a tram- car, and two days later detonators were placed on the tram-line. On the 14th August there was a dynamite explosion at the gate of the Taikoo Dockyard, as the men were coming out, and on the following day there was an explosion of fairly
